Death and Funeral

The Repat, Dept, was notified 3 days later, that on 12th November 1934 at 12.30am, William had died at the Heathcote Reception Home. The information was supplied by Mrs. K.M. Furlong and Mrs. Buzzard (Millar Buzzard’s wife). Mrs. Furlong desired particulars of Rank and military decorations for advertising purposes. [Death and Funeral notices.]

For its files, the Repat. Dept. filled out its own form, called the “Death of a War Pensioner”, on 26th November 1934.

Mrs. Furlong contacted the Repat. Dept., on 28th November 1934, and sought to get any money that William was owed by the Dept. The Dept in turn advised that any money, due to the estate, must be sought by a legal representative.

William’s cause of death was certified on 3rd December 1934 as pulmonary tuberculosis, a serious condition of the lungs that prevents oxygen from getting to the heart.

William’s mother, Emily Alice Vincent requested that William be buried in Moora, W.A. alongside in half-brother Millar Buzzard.

Two notices appeared in a Perth newspaper on 13th November 1934.

Three errors were made in the newspaper notices. William was not a Captain; he did not win the D.S.O (Distinguished Service Order) and he was in the King’s Own Royal Lancaster (not Lancashire) Regiment.

William’s body was transported, on the 7.30am train from Perth to Moora on 14th November 1934 and when it arrived in Moora his coffin was draped in the Union Jack. He was buried at 3.00pm that afternoon. Pallbearers were members of the local R.S.L. club and friends of the Buzzard family.

My grandmother, Mrs. M. M. [Margaret Mary] Buzzard, my father Mr. B. [Brian Sheridan] Buzzard and aunt Miss M. [Alice Margaret Mary – Marjorie] Buzzard were also in attendance and laid floral wreaths, together with Mrs. Furlong.
